  The Once

It's time for folk.  When the Garrick's patrons, some still half-dazed from Igor's wrath, wandered into the theatre last fall to see The Once, many had little knowledge of the group.  They had no idea what an impression these musicians would make on them.  Awestruck by Geraldine Hollett's enchanting voice along with the spine-tingling harmonies and superb musicianship of Andrew Dale and Phil Churchill, they're still talking about it.

The Once have had a whirlwind year.  After finishing UK and NL tours, they were the toast of the Canadian Music Folk Awards, winning both Traditional Album and New/Emerging Artist of the Year for their self-titled debut.  That album later received an ECMA nomination for Group Recording of the Year.

Rave reviews follow The Once everywhere.  The Globe and Mail said, "these three Newfoundlanders gracefully and evocatively offer gem-like maritime music."  The Chronicle Herald, Halifax claimed that, "[they] ... are gifted with strong voices that tremble with richness and vitality ... Their arrangements of Newfoundland and British Isles folk music are imaginative and newly minted with particularly fine a cappela trio versions."  The Scope in St. John's offered that, "[their] mastery of harmony is comparable to most people's mastery of breathing.."

Don't miss the show; come and write your own review.

The Novaks

Get ready to Rock!  Newfoundland's alternative rock sensations, the Novaks, will pump their own brand of heat into the Garrick's auditorium on this night.  For a few years these musicians have been - not so quietly - establishing their reputation as a premier rock band in Atlantic Canada.  They won the 2010 ECMA Rock Recording of the Year for their latest release, Things Fall Apart.  The Novaks have toured with Matt Mays and opened for KISS in Halifax.  The video for their single "There Goes The Night" was in regular rotation on MuchMore Music.

CBC's George Stroumboulopoulos described the band's performance as "unbelievable" and the Globe and Mail exclaimed, "Does this hard-riffing band rock?  What would Tom Petty in leather pants sound like? Wonder no more."  These guys look and sound like rock stars.  If you're a true rock fan, this show is for you.

Mark Bragg and the Butchers

Mark Bragg and the Butchers keep the temperature high on this night with their creative brand of indie rock. A St. John?s native (with roots in Greenspond on the other side of the Bonavista Bay), Bragg has made waves nationally and internationally with his compelling narrative song-writing style and rock sound. He has toured with his critically acclaimed albums - The Reckless Kind and Bear Music - throughout Canada, Ireland and Germany.

The German rock e-zine, Flaming Youth, said that, "Bragg's Bear Music should be a sound track, only question is who could make the movie that pays justice to his songs? The Canadian produced one road-movie after the other, with his colourful mixture of rocky, magnetizing, partially crooked, but always fully entertaining American Storytelling pop. Always interesting and often danceable.

Bragg later scored and composed the soundtrack for the acclaimed Newfoundland Film, Down to the Dirt. He is a previous ECMA nominee for Best Alternative Album and Best New Artist.

  Opera on the Avalon

And now for something completely different .....

Opera on the Avalon presents Mozart's masterpiece Le Nozze di Figaro, directed by Robert Herriot.  Under the baton of Maestro Judith Yan, join the next generation of operatic stars as they present this three act comic opera, with full orchestra and costumes.

Opera on the Avalon is the brainchild of Cheryl Hickman who serves as the company's artistic director and is Newfoundland's own bonafide opera star, having performed on great stages around the world.  Each year young Canadian opera singers come to Newfoundland to participate in a month long program under the tutelage of experienced and renowned international musicians and performers.  In the process they create fully-staged productions of opera classics.

This year's staging of Figaro at the Garrick offers a rare opportunity to hear these young professional voices soar in our intimate venue.  With that talent, a 20 piece orchestra, our acoustics, and beautifully designed costumes, it will be something to behold.

  Dennis Parker & Scott Goudie

It's time to sing the Blues.  And no one does it better than Denis Parker and Scott Goudie, household names on the Newfoundland Blues scene, and each with acclaimed CD's to their credit.

Goudie, who is also a fine visual artist, was studying fine art in Vancouver in the early 1970s when he met Mississippi Delta Blues man Johnny Shines, a contemporary of Blues legend Robert Johnson.  Goudie then moved to Alabama and studied and played with Shines, specializing in acoustic slide guitar.  He later played with several other Blues greats, including Muddy Waters.  In St. John's, Scott has been playing with fellow Blues musician Denis Parker since the early 1970s.

Born and raised in London, England, Parker feasted on a steady diet of Blues legends touring Europe in the 1960s.  Fascinated by the music's raw simplicity, he began writing original songs with his own vision on this most soulful of all musical styles.  Early in his career he moved to Newfoundland. Since then, he has established his unique style and over the years mastered this genre.

Parker and Goudie have long shared the stage in many bars, festivals and other venues throughout Newfoundland and elsewhere.  Join these accomplished musicians at the Garrick on this night for great music and a rollicking good time.  You'll be sure to leave your blues behind.

The Show Must Go On: the music of Queen

In the midst of summer heat, the Garrick is presenting what is sure to be its hottest show for the season.  This is classic rock and roll at its best with Kelly-Ann Evans and her Bohemian Band serving up the music of Queen, one of the greatest rock groups of all time.
This role was made for Evans, a graduate of the Memorial University's Music program who also studied Musical Theatre Performance at Sheridan College.  A bona fide triple threat with incredible vocal range and a dynamic stage presence, she is Freddy Mercury, the star of the show.  In part, Evans was inspired to create this show by her stint with the original Canadian company for "We Will Rock You" in Toronto, where she had the opportunity to perform live with Queen's Brian May and Roger Taylor.

Evans also has good help here with some of the finest musicians in the business, including the incomparable Glen Collins on lead guitar and the talented Brian Way, Scott Mansfield, Mark Peddle and Adam Staple.  And four members of the renowned choir, Quintessential Vocal Ensemble - Katie Hopkins, Dave Lane, Adrienne Fitzgerald, and Liam Parsons - contribute beautiful harmonies.

Last fall this show left the sold out crowd at the St. John's Arts and Culture Centre howling for more.  Don't miss this one.  They WILL ROCK YOU!

  Men of Country Music

Classic Country at its best is on the Garrick's menu this night with a blue ribbon group of musicians lassoed by musical director Brian Way.  A superb keyboardist with a Master's degree in Piano Performance from Memorial University, Way is pleased to debut this show in his ancestral home of Bonavista.  Throughout his career, he has collaborated with a diverse range of musicians (including Mickey Dolenz of “The Monkeys”, Philip Smith, principal trumpet with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and David Foster)  and appeared on over 30 albums.  He has been the musical director for many shows, including “Chicago,” “Cats,” “Our Divas Do Christmas,” and “Gypsy”.
But this talented group won't need much direction.  The legendary Bob Macdonald will contribute his golden vocals and guitar, as will the perennially popular David White, a Bonavista native known for his singing and stage presence.  White's regular musical partner and exceptional lead guitarist, Carl Peters, will be there too.  Scott Mansfield, known far and wide for his percussion prowess and the skilled bass player, Mark Peddle, both of whom have been frequent performers at the Garrick, will round out the group.
These "Men of Country" will bring you the classics from Woody Guthrie, Hank Williams (sr. & jr.), Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson, and many others.  If this is your music, this is your show.

This group turned heads quickly.  Voted "best new band" by readers of The Scope in 2009 and the "Band to Watch in 2010" by The Newfoundland Herald, more formal recognition came at the 2010 Music NL Awards, where they won four times for: "Rising Star - New Artist/Group," "Group of the Year," "Pop/Rock Artist Group," and "Entertainer of the Year."

Reviews have been great from the outset.   The Scope said that, "Hornell is intimate with his audience...people are dancing and singing along to his catchy folk songs.  Seemingly out of nowhere, Hornell has established not only a fan base, but a community around his music."  North by East West noted that, "[t]hey have an energetic radiance that fills the largest of rooms and warms the coldest of hearts. It would be a challenge to find anyone in the audience who isn't smiling after one of their uplifting performances."

  Ron Hynes

The Garrick will say good-bye to summer and welcome fall with the help of legendary singer-songwriter, Ron Hynes

Hynes began his career on the coffeehouse circuit in the early seventies, and, while on a Canadian theatre tour with The Mummers Troupe in 1976, he composed a song called "Sonny's Dream" that became a folk classic performed and recorded by artists all over the world.  He was also a founding member of the Wonderful Grand Band, a musical comedy show featuring a six-piece traditional/folk/rock band together with various members of Codco. The group produced two albums of original work, 42 half-hour television shows (plus specials) for CBC-TV, and regularly toured the country during its six-year history.

In the nearly 30 years since, Hynes has earned the moniker, The Man of a Thousand Songs, the title of a bio-pic about him that premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2010.  Several critically acclaimed albums, including Cryer's Paradise, Get Back Change, Standing in Line in the Rain, and, the newest release, Stealing Genius, have resulted in six East Cost Music Awards along with numerous nominations and other awards over the years.  Many of his songs have been covered by dozens of artists worldwide.

And this songwriter has stage presence.  Accompanied only by his guitar,  he can captivate an audience with his music and storytelling prowess.  On this night, allow yourself to be captivated by The Man of a Thousand Songs.

  At Ships End

Fasten your chin straps!  There’s an October gale blowing through the Garrick on this night with the up and coming six piece Newfoundland Folk/Rock/Traditional band, At Ships End.  Based out of St. John’s (band leader Adam Hunt can find his roots in nearby Spillars Cove), this young and vibrant group has been attracting attention on the East Coast music scene.  Their up-tempo music and energetic performances always attract a large and enthusiastic following.

They feature a variety of traditional instruments including banjo, fiddle and mandolin, which inject traditional Newfoundland and Irish elements into their authentic music.  As a result, they deliver the dominant, high-energy tempos of Rock with upbeat bass lines and electric guitar, while also utilizing the more culturally rooted instruments to create a Folk/Traditional feel.

Active on the St. John’s bar scene, this group is also writing its own material and recording with a new album scheduled for release in the summer of 2011, followed by a Canadian tour.  In 2010 the band filmed a commercial for Quidi Vidi Brewery which featured one of their original songs entitled, “Have You Ever”.

Have You Ever heard them?  If not, here’s your opportunity!
